グラフィックス基盤戦略を大幅転換、WPF/EはAdobeを振り払えるか？（3/3 ページ）
Microsoftのクロスプラットフォームグラフィックスフレームワークの「WPF/E」の開発計画が変更された。C#やVBを使用して、Windows以外のプラットフォームにも対応するデスクトップおよびWebアプリケーションを作成できるようになる見通しだ。開発ツール市場への進出を図るAdobeの脅威を払拭できるか？
Adobeは、Microsoftの開発者マーケティング手法を踏襲し、Flex SDKを無償でダウンロード提供する一方、Flex Builderと呼ばれるフル機能の統合開発環境（IDE）を販売している。Flex Builderは、最近注目を集めているオープンソース系のJavaベースIDE「Eclipse」を基盤にしたものである。Flex Builderの現行のβはWindows版のみだが、Mac OS X版の提供も予定されている。
Adobeの開発者市場に対する野望は、最近の2件の人材採用にも色濃く現れている。まず一人はMark Anders氏である。同氏は、ASP.NETの開発プロジェクトを立ち上げ牽引してきた人物だが、現在はAdobeにおいてFlexの開発に携わっている。2人目は、Microsoftの部門としては大きな成功を収めているDeveloper Relations グループおよびMSDN Networkで要職にあったSara Williams Spaulding氏で、現在同氏はAdobeの開発者リレーションズを率いている。
新プランの遂行は困難？
Microsoftの発表では、WPF/Eは段階的にリリースされる予定だ。プレビュー（“CTP”）版は2006年の第3四半期に、最終バージョンはWindowsおよびMac版が用意され、2007年上半期にリリースされる予定だ。デバイスバージョンについては、2007年下半期以降のリリースになる見込みだ。
ただし、このWPF/E対応.NET Frameworkプロジェクトの遂行は、特にサイズを2MB未満に抑えて、2007年前半までにリリースするというスケジュールを考えると、かなり厳しいものに思える。しかし、AdobeのFlexは既にβ段階にあり、スケジュールに遅れが出れば、Flashの人気をてこに、Flexのプロモーションに弾みを付ける機会をAdobeに与えることになる。
