　Windows Vistaは、32ビットおよび64ビットシステムにインストールできる消費者および企業向けの主要5エディションなどがラインナップされることになった。Windows Vistaの一部の重要な機能（多国籍企業が多言語対応の1つの展開イメージを作成できる機能や、ハイエンドのデータ暗号化機能など）を利用するには、新しい高価なエディションが必要になる。Microsoftはさまざまなエディションの提供により、顧客がエディション間でアップグレードすることによる多くの売り上げを得られる可能性がある。また、さまざまなエディションの提供は、一部顧客のライセンスコストの上昇や、MicrosoftのWindowsクライアント事業のPCメーカーへの依存軽減につながるかもしれないが、PCメーカーのPC 1台当たりの売り上げを押し上げる可能性もある。

Windows Vistaの企業向けエディション

　Windows Vistaの以下のエディションは企業やその他の組織向けに提供される。

Windows Vista Business
　Windows XP Professionalの後継エディションにあたるもので、あらゆる規模の企業をターゲットとしている。Windows Vistaの主要な強化機能、例えばセキュリティ機能であるUser Account Control（UAC）、新しいユーザーインタフェース（UI）であるWindows Aero、統合されたデスクトップ検索、Windows XPではTablet PCエディションで提供されているペン入力および「デジタルインク」機能の改良版などを搭載する。

Windows Vista Enterprise
　大企業をターゲットとしており、メンテナンスプログラムのソフトウェアアシュアランス（SA）やボリュームライセンスプログラムのエンタープライズアグリーメント（EA）を通じてWindowsクライアントOSのアップグレード権を購入済みの企業にのみ提供される。Windows Vista Enterpriseの機能のうち、Windows Vista Businessに搭載されないものは以下のとおり。

  • 強化されたMUI（Multilingual User Interface）サポート：複数の言語を使う多国籍企業が世界の拠点で1つのOSイメージを利用でき、Vistaをより容易に展開して保守できる。
  • TPM（Trusted Platform Module）ハードウェアのサポート：ハードディスク全体の暗号化（BitLocker Drive Encryptionと呼ばれる機能）などの高度なセキュリティ機能を利用できる。
  • Virtual PC Express：MicrosoftのVirtual PC製品の特別なエディション。この機能を使って1つの仮想マシンを実行し、その上でWindows Vistaに非対応の既存アプリケーションを利用できる。
  • UNIXアプリケーション用のサブシステム：一部のUNIXまたはLinuxアプリケーションをWindows Vista上で動作させることができる。

　Windows Vista BusinessとWindows Vista Enterpriseは、いずれも32ビットおよび64ビットプロセッサ（x64）用のインストールオプションを提供する。

Windows Vistaの消費者向けエディション

　Windows Vistaの以下のエディションは消費者向けに提供される。

Windows Vista Home Basic
　消費者向けの最も安価なエディション。古い、あるいは性能の低いPCを使って、主にインターネット閲覧や電子メール送受信、基本的な文書作成および編集を行っている消費者に特に適している。Windows XP Home Editionの実質的な後継エディションとなるものだ。Windows Vista Home Basicは、新しいWindows Aeroのグラフィックス効果は提供しないが、Windows Vistaのこの新UIのルック＆フィールをほぼ備えている。Windows Vista Home BasicにはIEの新バージョン、強化された検索、ペアレンタルコントロールなどの機能が搭載される。ペアレンタルコントロールは、親が低年齢や十代の子供のPCの使い方を容易に管理できる機能であり、どんなタイプのゲームで遊ぶのを許可するか、どんなインターネットサイトの閲覧を許可するかなどを指定できる。Windows XP Homeと同様に、Windows Vista Home BasicはWindowsドメインに参加することができず、企業利用に必要な他の機能も搭載しない。
