 一方、PowerShellのCmdletは.NETコードの構成要素であり、Common Language Runtime(CLR)の下で動作し、テキストではなく構造化されたデータオブジェクトを交換することで相互に通信する。これにより、PowerShellの管理者はテキスト処理を介さずにCmdlet間で出力をパイピングできるため、別個にテキスト処理ユーティリティを使う必要がなく、よりシンプルなコマンドライン命令とスクリプトが実現する。

 おそらく最も重要なのは、PowerShellを幾つかの方法で拡張し、カスタマイズできる点だ。例えば、ISVや社内開発者は、アプリケーション固有の管理タスクをカプセル化するカスタム版のCmdletを構築できる。こうしたCmdletはスナップインにコンパイルでき、さらに、スナップインはシェルに添付できるため、新しいCmdletはコマンドラインで呼び出したり、スクリプトで使用したりできる。あるいは、開発者は新しいCmdletをカスタムシェルにパッケージ化し、例えば、ある特定のアプリケーションの管理者など、操作上の特定の役割向けに専用のシェルを作成したりもできる。

 なお、Microsoftは同社の今後のアプリケーションの管理機能はPowerShellをベースとしたものになると示唆している。その第1弾となるのが、ExchangeとSystem Center製品だ。「Exchange Server 2007」(コード名で「Exchange 12」と呼ばれていた)と「System Center Operations Manager 2007」(コード名で「MOM v3」と呼ばれていた)の管理機能はPowerShellをベースとしたものとなり、管理者はこれらの製品をコマンドラインから完全にコントロールできることになる。ただし、ほかのアプリケーション向けのCmdletとスナップイン(カスタムシェル)が構築されるまでは、アプリケーション管理に関するPowerShellの有用性は限定的なものとなるだろう。例えば、管理者はWSHで動作するVBScriptスクリプトで関数を呼び出すのと同じように、あるアプリケーションのWindows Management Instrumentation(WMI)インタフェース(利用できる場合)で関数を呼び出すPowerShellスクリプトを作成したりもできるだろう。

PowerShellのリリース形態

 Microsoftは2006年4月、PowerShellのリリース候補(RC)をリリースした。このリリース候補は一般に公開されているが、ダウンロードの前にユーザー登録が必要だ。32ビット版と64ビット版が提供されており、.NET Framework 2.0が必要で、Windows Server 2003、Windows XP、Windows Vistaに対応する。PowerShellの最終版は2006年下半期にリリースされ、無料でダウンロードできるようになる見通し。Exchange 2007は2007年初頭の出荷が予定されている。Operations Manager 2007も2007年にリリース予定だ。
