　異例のことではあるが、MicrosoftはSystems Management Server（SMS）の2つのアップデート「SMS 2003 Release 2（R2）」と「System Center Configuration Manager 2007（コード名：SMS v4）」の公開βを同時期にリリースした。ソフトウェアのパッチ管理にSMSを利用するのであれば、SMS 2003 R2の評価を検討する必要があるだろう。SMS R2は、2006年半ばにリリースが予定されているマイナーリリースだが、Microsoft以外のソフトウェアのパッチを適用する機能が追加される。ただし、2007年前半リリース予定の次期メジャーリリースとなるSMS v4では、より多くの新機能と機能強化が実装される予定だ。

　SMS 2003は、Windowsベースのハードウェアおよびソフトウェア資産を管理するMicrosoftの現行製品で、ソフトウェアの配布、パッチの適用、ライセンス状態の管理、リモートシステムの問題の診断と解決を実現する。今回のβリリースの直前には、SMS 2003 SP2がリリースされており、同SPではいくつかの新機能を導入している。

SMS 2003 R2への更新は有償のケースも

　2005年4月のMicrosoft Management Summitにおいて名称未定のSMS 2003のアップデートが発表されていたが、これがSMS 2003 R2となった。つまり、ソフトウェアアシュアランス（SA）を持たない現行のSMS 2003ユーザーが同リリースにアップグレードする場合は、有償となり、新しいSMSのクライアントアクセスライセンス（CAL）も必要になる。SMS 2003 R2の公開βは2006年2月にリリースされている。最終リリースは2006年夏前になる予定だ。

　MicrosoftはSMS R2をフルリリースであるとしているが、実質的にはSMS 2003 SP2システムの機能パックである。SMS R2には基盤のSMSコードが含まれていないし、新機能もサードパーティ製品のパッチ適用機能と脆弱性評価機能の2機能のみだ。

大規模な改変が予定されるSMS v4

　SMSの次期メジャーリリースは、2007年前半になる予定だ。これはSystem Center Configuration Manager 2007（コード名でSMS v4）と呼ばれるもので、2006年2月に最初の公開βがSMS 2003 R2のβリリースのわずか2、3日後にリリースされている。ただし、基本機能が完成（feature complete）していて改変規模も小さいSMS 2003 R2のβと異なり、SMS v4のβ1は基本機能も未整備の状態であり、2006年後半にはβ2が提供される予定である。

　SMS v4のサーバコンポーネントはLonghorn Server上で稼働し、新しいシステムイメージング技術やネットワークアクセス保護などのLonghornおよびVistaの新機能を利用するが、Windows Server 2003上でも実行できる。ただし、SMS v4には、Windows NT 4.0およびWindows 98システムの管理に必要だったSMS Legacy Clientは搭載されない。
