個別にダウンロードが必要なコンポーネントも

　SP2によってサポートの基準をどの程度整えられるかは、ユーザーがどの追加コンポーネントや機能パックを導入するかによっても違ってくる。SP2には、これまでにリリースされた以下の2つの機能パックが含まれている。

Scalable Networking Pack（SNP）
　この機能パックにより、Windows Serverは複数のCPUと専用のネットワークアダプタを活用して数ギガビットのリンク速度を達成できる。また、IPSecの管理性が改善されるため、企業はネットワークを論理的にセグメント化し、サーバへの不要なアクセスを制限できる。

Windows Deployment Service（WDS）
　この機能パックはRemote Installation Service（RIS）に取って代わるもので、Windows Vistaの大量展開に利用できる。なお、WDSはMicrosoft Solution Accelerator for Business Desktop Deployment（BDD）2007にも含まれている。SP2にWDSが含まれたのは、ユーザーのためというよりは、Microsoftの都合によるもののようだ。ユーザーはまだWindows Vistaの導入を始めたばかりだし、WDSツールはBDDで入手できる。

　一方、SP2には、ユーザーがもっと差し迫って必要としているであろうコンポーネントが幾つか欠けている。例えば、多くのサーバアプリケーション（例えば、Microsoft Project Server 2007など）にとって不可欠な要素であるにもかかわらず、SP2には.NET Framework 3.0ランタイムプラットフォームが含まれていない。同様に、SP2には、Project Server 2007やSharePoint Server 2007などの製品に不可欠なWeb／チームコラボレーションプラットフォームのWindows SharePoint Services（WSS）3.0が含まれていない。

　そのため、こうしたコンポーネントやコンポーネントに付随する今後の修正プログラムについては、ユーザーはWindows UpdateかMicrosoft Updateからダウンロードする必要がある。こうした一貫性に欠くリリースは、統合の問題も引き起こしている。

　例えば、Configure Your Server（CYS）やManage Your Server（MYS）などのウィザードは、Windows Server 2003にWSS 3.0がインストールされた後も、依然として、「WSSがインストールされていない」と指摘してくる。そのため、管理者は既にWSS 3.0が搭載されているサーバに、誤ってWSS 2.0をインストールしてしまう可能性がある。

SP2の適用対象となるOSバージョン

　SP2はWindows Server 2003のすべての32ビット版、Itanium版、x64版のほか、Windows Server 2003 R2の各エディションに対応している。そのほかにSP2は、Windows Server 2003をベースとした幾つかの製品（Windows Server 2003 R2を含む）、Windows Compute Cluster Server、Windows Small Business Server R2、Windows XP Professional x64 Edition（XPの64ビット版も同一のサーバコードを用いているため）にも適用可能だ。
