モバイル版.NETとSQL ServerをROMに搭載
　Windows Mobile 5デバイスでは、.NET Compact Framework 1.0 SP3がROMに搭載されている。だが、SQL Server 2005 Mobile Editionを必要とするアプリケーションを稼働させるには、無料とはいえ、このデータベースエンジンをRAMに別途インストールしなければならない。これに対し、Windows Mobile 6デバイスでは、.NET Compact Framework 2.0 SP1とSQL Server 2005 Compact Edition（Mobile Editionの後継製品で、Mobile Editionで作成されたデータベースを完全にサポートする）がROMに搭載されている。このため、アプリケーション開発者がこのデータベースエンジンを再配布したり、それがデバイス上にあることをチェックしたりする必要がない。

VoIPサポート
　Windows Mobile 6プラットフォームは、VoIPクライアントインタフェースを備えていないが、無線データネットワークで通信するデバイスやアプリケーションの開発に大いに役立つSession Initiation Protocol（SIP）VoIPスタックを搭載している。British Telecom（BT）やHewlett-Packard（HP）などの企業が、このスタックを活用したWindows Mobileデバイスをいち早く提供する見込みだ。

新しい音声APIとインクAPI
　Windows Mobile 6ではいくつかの新しいAPIが導入されているが、最も注目されるのは、新しい音声APIと、インクAPIの軽量版だ。新しい音声APIはMID、WMA、MP3、WAVなど、豊富な音声ファイル形式をサポートする。WindowsタブレットPCプラットフォームから取り入れられたインクAPIの軽量版は、手書き認識などのインク機能を利用したタッチスクリーンデバイス向けアプリケーションの作成を可能にする。
