Outlook MobileおよびServer ActiveSyncの機能強化

 Exchange 2003以降、ExchangeにはServer ActiveSyncのサポートが組み込まれている。Server ActiveSyncは、ExchangeコンテンツとWindows Mobile 5.0搭載デバイス(Pocket PCやスマートフォン)上で稼働するOutlook Mobileとの無線での同期を実現するMicrosoft独自のプロトコルである。また、Motorola、Nokia、Palm、Sony Ericssonをはじめとする他の電話機メーカーも、Server ActiveSyncのライセンスを取得し、Windows Mobile非搭載の互換端末を販売している。これらの端末では、各端末専用のPIM(personal information manager)を使用してExchangeコンテンツの無線同期が可能だ。また、Exchange 2003 SP2ではダイレクトプッシュ同期のサポートが追加され、指定された間隔ではなく、新規アイテムを直ちに携帯端末と同期できるようになった。

 SP2とServer ActiveSyncのおかげで、上記の各種端末はRIM Blackberry携帯端末に代わりうる携帯端末に成長したが、OutlookやOWAクライアントの持つすべての機能が利用できたわけではなかった。しかし、Exchange 2007と、2007年リリース予定の次期Windows Mobileデバイス(Windows Mobile 6)に搭載される次世代のOutlook Mobile(コード名:Crossbow)では、次のような追加機能を利用できるようになる。

検索

 OutlookおよびOWAと同様に、Windows Mobile端末からも、Exchange 2007のメールボックス(端末にキャッシュされているアイテムだけでなく、メールボックス全体)の検索が可能になる。検索された任意のアイテムをダウンロード対象に指定すると、ActiveSyncによって直ちにExchangeサーバからデータが取得される。

会議出席依頼への返信

Exchange 2003およびServer ActiveSync対応デバイスでは、会議の予定を入れることも、会議への出席依頼に返信することもできなかった。Exchange 2007と新しいWindows Mobile端末を使用すると、会議出席依頼への返信が可能になる。ただし、新端末でも会議の予約を行うことはできていない。

不在時の自動応答の設定

 Exchange 2007と次世代デバイスでは、不在時の自動応答機能のオンとオフを携帯端末から切り替えることができる。これも、現行のデバイスでは実現されていない機能だ。

ユーザーによるリモートワイプ

 Exchange 2007のOWAでは、ユーザーが紛失または盗難に遭ったデバイスのデータをすべてリモートから消去(リモートワイプ)できる。リモートワイプは、Exchange 2003と現行のWindows Mobileデバイスでも既にサポートされているが、管理者でなければこの操作を実行できなかった。しかし、機密データの漏洩リスクを軽減するためには、管理者に連絡して消去を依頼する時間を費やすのではなく、ユーザーが直ちに携帯端末上の機密データを消去できるほうがよいだろう。

 現行のWindows Mobile 5.0端末とActiveSync対応端末でも、Exchange 2007と問題なく連携できるが、ユーザーによるリモートワイプ機能を除いて、上記の新機能を利用することはできない。Windows Mobile 5.0での実績を考えると、現行の端末をWindows Mobileの次期リリースにアップグレードすることはできないだろう。新しいハードウェアが必要になると思われる。
