過去10年で最も重要なWindowsのアップデートとは？：Windowsフロントライン（1/2 ページ）

　2021年5月25日（米国時間）から、3日間の日程でMicrosoftの開発者カンファレンス「Build 2021」がオンラインで開催された。初日にあたる25日には同社CEOのサティア・ナデラ氏による基調講演の映像が流れ、Windowsを含む同社の最新の取り組みが紹介されているが、今回は5月末時点までで出ているWindowsを中心とした話題のアップデートをまとめよう。

Windows 10Xが正式にキャンセルされた話

　同件はWindowsやMicrosoftの最新事情に詳しいブラッド・サムス氏の記事を引用して既に紹介済みだが、Microsoftは2021年中でのリリースを計画していたシングルスクリーン向けのOS「Windows 10X」と、同OSを搭載したOEMメーカー各社のPCが少なくとも登場しない見込みとなった。

　後に、5月18日に同社Windows Servicing＆Delivery部門担当プログラムマネジメント兼バイスプレジデントのジョン・ケーブル氏名義で投稿された「How to get the Windows 10 May 2021 Update」というBlog記事によれば、同日時点でWindows 10の大型アップデート（機能アップデート）「21H1」こと「May 2021 Update」の一般提供を開始するとともに、Windows 10Xについて次のように触れている。

Following a year-long exploration and engaging in conversations with customers, we realized that the technology of Windows 10X could be useful in more ways and serve more customers than we originally imagined. We concluded that the 10X technology shouldn't just be confined to a subset of customers.

Instead of bringing a product called Windows 10X to market in 2021 like we originally intended, we are leveraging learnings from our journey thus far and accelerating the integration of key foundational 10X technology into other parts of Windows and products at the company. In fact, some of this is already reflected in the core of Windows in Windows Insider preview builds, for example the new app container technology we're integrating into products like Microsoft Defender Application Guard, an enhanced Voice Typing experience, and a modernized touch keyboard with optimized key sizing, sounds, colors and animations. Our teams continue to invest in areas where the 10X technology will help meet our customer needs as well as evaluate technology experiences both in software and hardware that will be useful to our customers in the future.

This shift in thinking is an incredible example of the company's value of a growth mindset at work and exemplifies our customer-first focus.

　簡単にまとめれば「長年の顧客との対話の中でWindows 10Xのような仕組みが有用で、当初考えていたよりも多くのユーザーを相手にできるようになると考えていたけど、結論としては一部ユーザー限定のような仕組みは得策ではないということに。当初計画にあったWindows 10Xの2021年リリースはないけれど、そこで取り込む予定だった重要な技術は他のWindowsや製品に導入していくからよろしく」というニュアンスになる。

　「2021年には登場しない」という表現はブラッド・サムス氏の記事の中でも使われていたが、実質的に一度凍結されたプロジェクトが後にそのままの形で復活する可能性はほとんどないため、「Windows 10X」という“形態”のソフトウェアは今後も登場することはないと筆者は考える。

　ただし、以前の記事でも筆者が触れたように、2021年後半には「21H2」という大型アップデートが「Sun Valley」という新しいUIコンセプトを引っさげて登場する中で、技術的にWindows 10Xと共通のコンポーネントを搭載することになるが、当初Windows 10Xの方が市場投入時期が早いという予想があり（21H2は11月以降なのに対してWindows 10Xは8〜9月ごろ）、Windows 10Xが一種の「Windowsの新UIの先行お披露目」に近い位置付けになる可能性があった。

　その意味では、Windows 10Xの計画がキャンセルされたことで、21H2に搭載されるとみられるSun Valley並びに新機能の数々は、Windows 10の大型アップデート配信をもって“お披露目”されることになる。

ナデラ氏のいう「過去10年で最も重要なアップデート」とは

　Build 2021におけるナデラ氏の基調講演の動画はMicrosoftの公式ページから閲覧でき（18分間と非常にコンパクトだ）、おまけに日本語字幕まで表示できる親切設計だが、「Windowsの最新情報だけを知りたい」という人のために、同社が公開しているトランスクリプトから重要部分だけを抜粋して紹介する。

　ポイントは冒頭の「one of the most significant updates to Windows of the past decade」の部分だ。「過去10年（the past decade）」で「最も重要なアップデートの1つ（one of the most significant updates）」ということで、Windows 8やWindows 10のリリースよりも同社（と開発者やクリエーター）にとって意味があるものとナデラ氏が強調している点にある。

　3月初旬に開催されたIgnite 2021において、Windowsや関連ハードウェアの開発を取り仕切るパノス・パネイ氏が「the next generation of Windows」のことを「現時点では話せないが、非常に素晴らしいものになる」と予告している。

　Windows 10のリリース以降、Microsoftがこうした“あおり方”や予告をするのは非常に珍しく、それだけ開発者やユーザーの注意を引きたいとの表れなのだと筆者は考える。

　具体的に「one of the most significant updates to Windows」や「the next generation of Windows」が何を指すのかは両氏ともに触れていないが、おそらく21H2とSun Valleyのことを意味しているのは間違いないだろう。この成果がお披露目されるのは「間もなく」とのことなので、両氏がアピールするだけの何かがあるのか、期待して待っていることにしよう。

　続いて、活況を呈するPC市場の今後を考えてみよう。
